Then Visit Elazığ | Tourist Guide

Image
Are you bored at home all time? Why don't you visit Elazığ? It is a city in eastern Türkiye. We used to live there. Now I am so far from Elazığ and missed little. If you are visiting there, this blog will help you to make a plan. Harput Elazığ was not in its current center before. Harput used to be the first settlement site for ancient people. It was difficult for the enemies to come because it was a mountainous area. People started to build houses in the flat area over time. That flat area became today's Elazığ now. The zone where the ancient people lived is now a tourist attraction in Elazığ. There is a big castle on the mountain, ancient workshops, picnic places, souvenir shops, old houses, an observation terrace, mosques, museums, and more. Harput's name comes from har (stone) and put (castle), so it means Stone Castle in today's Turkish. Harput really is a living history. Karaleylek Canyon Karaleylek Canyon is located in Baskil, Elazig, by the Euphrates Ri...

What is Bilsem? How To Get Accepted?

Hi, you know, we moved recently, new house, new city, etc. Besides schools in Türkiye; There are schools that provide education for art, music and general talent. They are called Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi (Science and Art Centre), Bilsem for short. To enter the schools, you have to pass several staged exams. There are 3 sections in the art branch exam I had taken before. If you pass the written exam, you jump to the next step. It includes mathematics, Turkish and visual intelligence. If you pass a set score, you will be called for the next round. It is a drawing exam for drawing pencils. You sit at round placed tables in a school classroom and draw by looking at the object. I never forget, my object in my drawing exam was a ceramic teapot. After passing the second one, there is one left. And it is colored drawing by imagination. The teacher gives you a subject to draw, then you draw what you want. In my exam, the subject was space. At the end of the day, if you pass ...

Crown Shyness | Even Trees Need Personal Space

Image
In some tree species such as pine and eucalyptus , the sections called the crown of the upper branches form gaps with those of neighboring trees. This is called crown shyness. It is still unknown why this condition which is more common in trees of the same species occurs. Some hypotheses on this subject are given below. The gaps between trees are formed when branches and leaves have blown in windy weather are damaged by collisions and fall. An experiment was made to test this hypothesis, called reciprocal pruning . In this experiment, it had seen that the gap between two trees with fixed crown parts was closing. But some researchers studying different species think that some trees that show crown shyness stop growth in the up sections before the collision occurs. The reason for this is said to be the phytochrome structure that detects sunlight. Depending on the angle of the sunlight, the tree that is sometimes in the shade of the other tree stops growin...

Not Just Dad's Arrival but Also History of Gifts

My dad had been to Sakarya to see my grandmother -who is 93 years old- for a while. After the longing was over and wandered around, he came back from Sakarya today. As he hadn't told us when will he come, we couldn't welcome him. I wouldn't have welcomed him even if he had told me because I had homework to do. He knocked the door, we opened it, he entered the house, but he didn't get anything for us. When my mom noticed that, she complained to him, but that didn't change anything. At least, it is his own hometown and knows the place well, so it was not hard to buy something for us. Normally, when people come or visit somewhere, they bring gifts. It doesn't change if they are known or strange. When I looked up the history of giving gifts, I coincided a book that Jacob Spon -who is an explorer- wrote. He is talking about giving gifts custom has started in Roman Empire's early times that book. According to the information he had gotten from Simmakus, in order ...

Places I Like in Eskişehir | Where to Visit?

Image
I mentioned yesterday that my aunts came from Eskişehir . I thought I was talking about Eskişehir a lot these days, so I wanted to write down my favorite places there. Before the pandemic, I used to go there every summer holiday with my cousins and had a good time. As my grandma was born and has lived there, she knows the best places in Eskişehir. While I was having this opportunity, we talked about the best places to visit, and we were in disagreement. So I wanted to make a list of my favorite places in Eskişehir. Kanlıpınar Park When I was in Eskişehir, I used to love going to Kanlıpınar for a picnic. We used to barbecue there, play games, wander around the lake. There are barbecue stoves and ready made hammocks. I used to walk among the trees and take pictures with my cousins. They are 5 and 7 years older than me but we are like friends with them, you would like it if you saw it. If we go back to the park, it is a very big and beautiful place. Anyone who wants...

Aunties' Short Visit

My little aunt and her family also lives in Eskişehir. They and my other aunt came our house tonight. Ofcourse not for our new house, because of my eldest cousin Aleyna's university checks and dorm entering. First they came and had breakfast at our home, then they left for university. My big aunt, Nilgün, stayed with us and helped us to settle down. My aunt helped us a lot, she cleaned the windows and floor, put things back in their place, even hung the curtains. Can't thank her enough. At the dinner time, cousin and family came back to eat meal with us. These moments were priceless, considering how long I had not seen them. Everyone in family loves my mom's meals. Actually I was little bit dissatisfied about our not so perfect preparation, but you already know, we moved recently :) Still I can't believe how much work my aunt has done in few hours. She is as fast as rollercoaster. But unfortunately she is not fearless. I'm fearless huh . Just joking. After eating c...

That Turkish Soup: Tarhana

Image
Hello, in this blog I will write something about Türkiye again :) In Türkiye, there is a soup called Tarhana. We moved recently, but my mom did tarhana beforehand. I already said that she is a hardworking woman.  Although it is difficult to prepare tarhana, it is just as easy to make the soup. If you are wondering enough, we're going to the preparation. For make tarhana soup, you need tarhana first🤓. To make tarhana dough, you add flour, yogurt, tomato and pepper paste, parsley, boiled onion, enough salt into a large bowl and mix well. It is mixed daily for a week. It is laid on the cloth. It is dried and make crumbled day by day with hand. We Turkish people make this preparation for winter, and drink all the time. After the crumbling, it becomes powder and stored in cold and dry place. Any time you want, just add water and tarhana powder into a saucepan, stir until it thickens the level you want, and it's ready to serve. I am leaving you tarhana photos that m...

New House, Just Got Cold, Fresh Frozen

The weather is getting colder every day. I started to wear long sleeved clothes. I never thought that the winter could come this early. My grandmother came from Eskişehir the week the schools opened. I was happy since I have not seen my grandma as in face for 2 years. Having someone to open the door when you come home from school is a good thing. Even your meal is ready! Not only me, grandma's coming makes neighbors' children happy too, I think. When they come from school, same as mine, she also gives them food sometimes (my favorite is gözleme ). I still feel strange in this city since we moved recently. Since we were moving, we ate everything in the deep freezer before. Now it's high time we filled the deep freezer again. My mom cooks very well and is diligent but it is hard to do winter preparation only in person. So mom and grandma are making the preparation together. Let's look at what we do for winter. Menemenlik One of the most consumed dishes in Türkiye for br...

How to Understand That a Word Is Turkish?

If you have an interest in the Turkish language, there are words that you probably have thought are not Turkish. Even some native speakers are struggling to find which given word is not Turkish. In this writing, I am going to show you some tips that I learned in school. Before the Latin alphabet, the Arabic alphabet was used. When the alphabet changed, some issues came with it. Such as caret or with its direct meaning in Turkish; correcting sign. I will come back to this later. 1) Two Vowels Two vowels can not be side by side in a word. Such as sıhhat (health), millet (nation), şiddet (violence), bakkal (grocery)... 3) Long Vowels There are no long vowels in Turkish. Why Are Birthdays Celebrated?

Image
Hello , of course, I won't start with " Welcome to my first blog! ". As you don't know, today was my mom's birthday, dad brought a strawberry cake and we make a surprise for my mom in the evening. She was so surprised and happy. She blew the candles, we ate the cake deliciously and drank tea -I am saying this as an experienced Turk that drinking tea with everything is a daily activity for us- . Then a question came to my mind: Why are birthdays celebrated? Almost everyone has celebrated their birthday at once. Gifts that were given, cakes that were made, and best wishes that were told on birthdays make people joyful and make them wait for eagerly the next birthday. Have you ever think why you celebrate your birthday while these things happen around you? When we look at the past, we see that only significant people's birthdays are written on (for example, sons of Babylonians) . The first celebration in history belongs to the E gyptian Pharaoh around 3000 BC. T...
