Barış Manço: First "Peace" of Türkiye

Before Barış Manço's birth, let's talk about his grandparents. After Mehmet II's conquer of Istanbul, Mançozade Family moved to Thessaloniki from Konya. They lived there until WWI, then moved to Istanbul again due to the hardships of war. Many years later, they changed their surname after the surname law came into force. Barış Manço was born in Istanbul on January 2nd, 1943 as Hakkı Manço and Rikkat Uyanık's second child with the full name; Tosun Yusuf Mehmet Barış Manço. Barış Manço says that his name which means "peace" was given to him because of his parents' wanting the war to end. Barış Manço is also the first person to have this name in Türkiye. Mrs Rikkat and Mr Hakkı -were Turkish Classical Music artists-, separated when he was 3 years old. Barış Manço grew up with his father and spent his childhood in Kadıköy. He attended Galatasaray High School but after he lost his father in the 10th grade he left Galatasaray High School and went to Şişli Terakki High School and graduated from there.
Barış Manço started singing at the age of 2 with family talent and started amateur music when he was in the 2nd grade. After graduating from high school, he first went to Paris and then to Belgium for his older brother, Savaş Manço. He studied painting, graphics and interior design at the Belgian Royal Academy of Fine Arts and graduated from this school as the top student of the school. When Manço returned to Turkey in 1969, he made the "Dağlar Dağlar" song. This song was a significant point in his life. In the same year, his image changed and he started a flow with his music and clothes.
He formed bands in school and early 20s, for example, the most famous one, Kurtalan Ekspres. He started to Anatolian Rock movement with his American song covers and Turkish folk song arrangements. He also worked with famous musicians like Erkin Koray, Mazhar Alanson, Fuat Güner...
After going to military service, making music, going to Belgium again, he married Lale Çağlar Manço in Istanbul. Not only marriage, they also were partners in TV industry, Lale Manço was producer and director of many tv programs. He knew many languages such as English, French, Portuguese, and German; and could speak a bit of 17 languages like Japanese and Arabic. Their first son Doğukan was born in 1981, and second son Batıkan in 1984. He made the longest and most successful television programs in Türkiye. More than 200 of his songs made him win 12 gold and platinum album awards. Some of his songs were translated into Greek, Bulgarian, Arabic, Persian, Japanese, Hebrew, French, English and Dutch. His songs were very popular in every country.
On February 1st, 1999, Barış Manço died of a sudden heart attack before the release of his newly finished last work, Mançoloji. His grave is in the Kanlıca Cemetery.
